Reconstructing Pudu Jail

Artwork description:

Pudu Jail had served as a symbol of deterrent to criminals for a century, reminding them about the rule of law and their destination should they break it. It is the epitome of justice in Malaysia. Its mural depicts the contrast between an incarcerated life within four walls and a life of freedom in a bustling concrete jungle. By inserting name cards in the roller shutter of a shop, the artists recreated the façade of the recently demolished Pudu Jail.

Post Box House

This work is fantasy-like and infinite at the same time. Find a new home for your heart within these variables; make the new home from your hearts. I found the freedom to assimilate the essence of contemporary and traditional expression from the title to set a sublime mood. Even the installation site is almost located in the darker corner of the space where there is fewer passers-by. This allows me to create an extraordinary silent environment in terms of distance, angle and time. I am wondering and anticipating how this can affect our experience of space, especially for those post box user and people passing by. In regards to space, I have crafted the Post Box House carefully so that each piece can find its own autonomous existence. The Post Box House began to evolve intuitively as I draw inspiration from our own emotional responses to the ever-changing environment, hoping to create an internal landscape that captures the essence of nature in motion.

Giving Out Blessings

In the early Chinese community, there was the custom of doing “BaiNa”. When a child is one month old or 100 days old, friends and relatives will each give a piece of palm-sized cloth to the child’s mother. She will gather all these cloths and sew them into a garment or a quilt for the child. Garment made with this kind of patchwork pattern is known as “Bai Na Yi” or “Bai Jia Yi”(Garments from Hundred Families), and the quilt is known as “Bai Na Bei”(Hundred Blankets). Wearing garment and using quilt such as these symbolizes that the child will be easy to raise and will live a long life.

This installation artwork is meant to show the interaction between art and the community, passers-by, and tourists. There are two stages to this interactive process:
In the first stage, the artists and volunteers collected cloths donated by the community.
In the second stage, artists invited the locals, passers-by and tourists and used the collected cloths to tie knots on the strings as a gesture of blessing the Pudu community.
